EU Commission proposes new sanctions, including banning oil imports from Russia.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke at the European Parliament (EP) General Assembly held in Strasbourg.
Explaining the content of the new sanctions package planned for Russia, von der Leyen said, “Today we present the sixth package of sanctions.”
Von der Leyen stated that within the scope of the package, they will add high-ranking officers and other persons who committed war crimes in Bucha and responsible for the siege of Mariupol city to the sanctions list. “We are removing Sberbank, Russia’s largest bank, and two other large banks from SWIFT.” Von der Leyen said, thus targeting the banks that have critical importance in Russia’s financial system.
“We are addressing our dependence on Russian oil. To be clear, it will not be easy. Some member states are dependent on Russian oil. Now, we propose a ban on Russian oil. ” Von der Leyen said.
