German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that they would make payments in euros for natural gas imported from Russia.
Scholz, at the press conference, “We looked at the contracts. It says that the payment will be made in euros. During the meeting, I told the President of Russia that this should be the case and will remain so.” He pointed out that companies, in particular, want to make these payments in euros.
Stating that efforts are continuing to reduce energy dependence on Russia, Scholz said, “This is a work that will take time. We will continue to diversify energy imports. This is also a long-term message to Putin.”
“Putin should agree to a ceasefire, enable humanitarian aid, and conduct real peace negotiations,” Scholz said, urging Vladimir Putin to end the war against Ukraine.
Scholz noted that the sanctions against Russia will be implemented with determination.
